Advanced Metering Technology

Progressed Metering Technology Theoretical: This paper portrays about the improvement of cutting edge metering and the force the board system. Energy sparing is the significant one on the planet situation. We need vitality to do anything in this world. The interest of intensity is developing at a quicker rate than the transmission limit because of the expansion in populace development and furthermore increment in coal, fuel costs. To beat the deficiency of intensity flexibly, this paper gives a diagram of remote sensor organize by dealing with an equivalent conveyance of capacity to the purchasers by utilizing Zigbee innovation and furthermore to keep away from the force burglary issue. The Zigbee Digital Power meter (ZPM) which use the Wireless sensor system to send the force use perusing of the shopper hub to the vitality supplier segment. The vitality supplier side will show the vitality unit devoured by the customer in the LCD which put in their homes. At the vitality supplier side they have the control to c hange need of the gadgets when force appropriated in low range. Catchphrases: Power the executives framework, remote electric meter, Wireless sensor organize, Zigbee and so forth Presentation The World is presently confronting a most basic issue of not getting a continuous force gracefully. In numerous nations, the individuals living there had not in any case getting the flexibly for their essential needs, for example, light, fan,tv etc. This happens because of deficiency of intensity supply.Due to enoromous development in populace the force appropriated by the base station can't have the option to use similarly by all the individuals living in the country.Because of over population, the request of vitality is expanding step by step. Inorder to conquer the deficiency of intensity supply, government is hidden numerous activities to give ceaseless gracefully to the shoppers by embedding atomic force plants,by having MOU with outside nations to get coal, fuels et,and numerous more. And additionally researchers are doing numerous experiments, researches to give more power flexibly to satisfy the people groups need. The governments are presently finding a way to spare the vitality as opposed to basic force age undertakings and this paper will be one of key for that. At existing system, the vitality supplier are closing down the force gracefully inorder to spare vitality during the vitality emergency time for more than 4hours per day. This makes inconvenience the underneath arrived at the midpoint of and the white collar class people groups are influencing more by power cut.The industries, companies, factories are having inverters to get nonstop force supply. The people groups who doesn't have the inverters are enduring more. During the force deficiency times a large number of them utilizing AC(Air Conditioner),Fridge,Heater and so on so request of intensity is more i.e.,the nductive burdens devouring more vitality so the individuals who having single stage flexibly are having low-voltage problems.Through this strategy we can ready to deal with the force by giving vitality just to the low force expending gadgets like fans, light, computer and so forth which are the essential needs. And not permitting the ability to the high force expending gadgets like a ir conditioner, heater, etc. To accomplish this, framework can be made which will separate between high force and low force gadgets at each hub and permit just low force gadgets to be ON.This can done by making a remote sensor arrange having number of hubs which speak with one another in full duplex mode. The correspondence will comprise of information move, controlling hub activity. We are utilizing zigbee convention for the remote correspondence. The primary bit of leeway of utilizing ZigBee convention is that the hubs require extremely less measure of intensity so it very well may be worked from battery. If any hub which expends more force than the assigned vitality then the force streams that hub gets cutted through the intrude on given through the zigbee so we can maintain a strategic distance from the force robbery. Every hub is estimating the force, which is being devoured by the machine and it is sent to the vitality supplier area through remote sensor arrange and furthermore the units devoured by the hub is shown in LCD which is place at the buyer side. The apparatus is constrained by the end gadget for example hub. A general activity of the framework constrained by the control gadget. The primary motivation behind the task is that the remote sensor system will separate and control the gadgets in the system based on power devoured by machines to utilize power likewise to stay away from power robbery and units devoured by the hub can likewise hinted to the purchaser side and the vitality supplier side. Through that the buyer can ready to screen the use of vitality. Likewise we proposed the e-charging framework in this paper. Charging framework for power utilization is physically done by human administrator. Readings gathered by human administrator are utilized for charge count. Manual handling of charging framework is very tedious and it can cause human blunder also. The manual bill passage is mistaken and inefficient.Due to the innovation advancement we are utilizing computerized meter rather than simple meter. . It is advantageous to execute remote electric meter by interfacing Zigbee module with the advanced electronic meter. All advanced electronic meter alongside Zigbee module can frame a system. The utilization of Wireless Personal Area Networks has been consistently expanding lately. The burden and calculated worries of laying wires for a correspondence arrange lay the ground for a considerably more engaging advances consolidating remote transmission. Evacuating the imperatives of the physical establishment of wires, remote arrangements g ive assorted variety and in numerous applications can lessen cost. Information from electric meter, for example, meter perusing can be transmitted to the vitality supplier Station from purchaser hub by framing a way utilizing system topologies. Zigbee module bolster Star, Tree, and Mesh topology. Zigbee systems encourage numerous applications, for example, Commercial Building and Home Automation, Security, Healthcare Medical Monitoring, Vehicle Monitoring, Agriculture and Environmental Monitoring, etc. The Zigbee convention stack dependent on IEEE 802.15.4 offers a commonsense, financially savvy answer for ease and low force utilization WPANs. . Zigbee depends on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard alongside different conventions like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Zigbee works in the modern, logical and clinical (ISM) radio band, explicitly at 2.4 GHz globally and 868MHz or 915 MHz in explicit pieces of the world. The effortlessness and cost of Zigbee systems makes them a more prominent one for remote control and observing applications. The Zigbee convention can bolster more than 65,565 hubs and can work in three system topologies: Mesh, Star and Ring. Writing SURVEY 2.1 S. Vukmirovic, A. Erdeljan, F. Kulic, and S. Lukovic, â€Å"SOFTWARE ARCHITECTURE FOR SMART METERING SYSTEMS WITH VIRTUAL POWER PLANT,† in MELECON 2010-2010 fifteenth IEEE Mediterranean Electro specialized Conference. IEEE, 2010, pp. 448â€451. This paper presents a novel design for Smart Metering frameworks which empowers their consistent, secure and productive incorporation in more extensive Smart Grid programming structures. Brilliant metering arrangements speak to one of the quickest advancing zones in the field of intensity appropriation frameworks. There is a broad enthusiasm of driving programming sellers in the field, for advancement of models that can effectively oversee transmission, preparing and putting away of the huge measure of information created by such metering gadgets sent toward the end-end side. The coordination of these frameworks into existing force framework programming structures (blackout the executives, workforce the executives, and so on.) speaks to a significant test for the exploration network. In such a situation it is of major significance to receive normalized information trade instruments. The proposed engineering is considered as a measured and adaptable structure with the goal that it can bolster usage of novel force dissemination ideas as Virtual Power Plants (VPPs). The proposed engineering has been effectively tried and checked, in actuality, activity as one of the modules of Smart Metering framework named Meter Data Management (MDM). 2.2 Z. Xiao, Y. Need ofnon-repudiationis a significant hindrance to building a trustworthysmartgrid.Oncurrent power frameworks, bills are created dependent on the measure of administration devoured by private or business clients. In any case, meter readings may not be reliable because of pernicious conduct (e.g., vitality robbery) or outside assaults. The main driver is that power suppliers have no way to acquire the perusing esteem other than accepting it from the others. To determine this issue, we present a common review system, which empowers no revocation on meter readingsforsmartgrid. The objective of our plan is to find risky meters that report wrong understanding qualities. 2.3 S. Depuru, L. Wang, V. Devabhaktuni, and N. Heres what you need to know about the effectiveness and safety of St. Johns wort for treating childhood depression. What Is St. Johns Wort? St. Johns wort is an over-the-counter natural herb also known as Hypericum perforatum, Klamath weed, hypericum, and goatweed. The flowering plant can be used for many purposes and is available in a variety of forms. The extract can be used alone or in combination with other herbs as a nutritional supplement in a capsule, tablet, liquid, or topical product. The flowering tops of the St. Johns wort plant is often used in teas. People have reported using the herb to treat a wide variety of symptoms and disorders including depression, nerve pain, sleep problems, and anxiety. St. Johns wort was also investigated as a potential treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children, however, the research found it to be ineffective.?? What Is St. Johns Wort? What the Research Says About Use in Children The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine states that the research on St. Johns wort has provided inconsistent results and therefore it doesnt consider it to be an effective treatment for depression.?? However, there have been studies that appear to demonstrate St. Johns worts potential effectiveness for treating depressive symptoms in adults, both when compared to a placebo and prescription depression medications such as Zoloft (sertraline).?? When used appropriately, St. Johns wort may be comparable to serotonin reuptake inhibitors (such as Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa, Zoloft, and others) in effectiveness and safety for treating depression in adults. However, the use of St. Johns wort for depression in children has not been well-studied. There have not been many studies specifically assessing the use of St. Johns wort in the treatment of childhood depression. A study from 2003 included boys between the ages of 6 and 16 found that of the 33 youths in the study, 25 met response criteria (based on responses to a depression rating scale) after taking St. Johns wort for 8 weeks and didnt have any major side effects from taking the herb. This data is promising, but doesnt compare St. Johns wort with placebo.?? Another study in 2005 found that some adolescents with mild depression might benefit from using St. Johns wort. However, the study did not look specifically at improvement of depressive systems as an outcome variable. In both studies, the researchers noted the need for additional research to support the findings, particularly with placebo-controlled trials. Use in Children vs. Adults Studies that look at how a medication works for adults cant always be used to show how it would work in children. There are many factors that determine how a medication or supplement might affect a child, and its not necessarily as simple as giving them a lower dose of a drug because they are smaller than an adult. One example of this phenomenon is the use of prescription antidepressant medications in children. A potential danger of antidepressant use in people under the age of 25 is an increase in suicidal thoughts or behavior. While the side effect is uncommon, it was significant enough that the FDA put a black box warning on all prescription antidepressants. Its unclear if natural and herbal supplements could carry the same risk. But if St. Johns wort can alter neurotransmitters in a way thats similar to how antidepressant medications work, the question would be of valid concern for researchers, medical professionals, alternative medicine practitioners, and anyone considering using it. Its important to remember that a diagnosis of depression alone is associated with a higher risk of suicide, regardless of treatment. If someone you love is depressed, make sure you know the warning signs of suicide. What to Do If Your Child Has Suicidal Thoughts Medication Interactions St. Johns wort has the potential to interact with many commonly used medications. The FDA issued a public health advisory about these possible interactions and maintains an updated database of drug-herb interactions. Due to its effect on enzymes in the liver, St. Johns wort has the potential to either decrease the levels (and effectiveness) of medications, or increase levels which raises the risk of toxicity. While many of these reactions are minor, dangerous and life-threatening reactions can occur if St. Johns wort is combined with certain drugs. Medications that may interact with St. Johns wort include: Antidepressants (Combining St. Johns wort with serotonin reuptake inhibitors may result in serotonin syndrome.)Cough and cold preparationsOral contraceptives (i.e., birth control pills)Seizure medicationsDrugs used to treat cancerBlood thinners such as Coumadin (warfarin)Heart disease medication such as digoxinMedications used to reduce the risk of organ transplant rejectionAntibioticsHIV drugs such as Crixivan (indinavir) and Viramune (nevirapine)Other herbal and nutritional supplements If you are considering using St. Johns wort for your child, its important to talk to your pediatrician or child psychiatrist about any medications, herbal supplements, over-the-counter drugs, or vitamins that your child is taking. St. Johns Wort and Antidepressants Adverse Effects Its sometimes thought that herbal medications are safer or that they dont have side effects because they are natural, but this is simply not true. Herbal preparations can increase the risk of adverse effects just as prescription drugs can. The fact that St. Johns wort is plant-based makes some people feel that these products are safer than traditional drugs, but its important to keep in mind that many prescription medications, including some blood thinners and strong chemotherapy agents, are also plant-based. Common side effects of St. Johns wort include sensitivity to sunlight, dry mouth, dizziness, stomach upset, fatigue, headache, and anxiety. Parents should weigh the risks and benefits of any herbal products much the same way as they would a prescription drug. This can be difficult as herbal products are not regulated to the same degree in the United States. Talking With Your Pediatrician If your child is depressed and you would like to try complementary treatments, discuss the possibility with your childs pediatrician or psychiatrist. Your childs doctor can discuss the risks and benefits of St. Johns wort with you and help determine the best treatment options for your childs specific circumstances. With a few exceptions, most general practitioners may be unfamiliar with both the potential benefits and risks of St. Johns wort and may only prescribe it infrequently. If you are unsure if your childs symptoms are part of a depressive disorder, ask your pediatrician about having an evaluation. Its best to have your child seen by a psychiatrist or other mental health professional before trying any natural remedies for depression. If you have started using St. Johns wort or any herbal supplement with your child, you must tell your childs doctor due to the potential for serious interactions with other medications that may be prescribed. Importance of Addressing Childhood Depression Depression is not uncommon in children and can be serious. St. Johns wort may or may not be an appropriate treatment, but you have already taken a major and important step by considering the presence of depressive symptoms in your child. Childhood depression can be difficult to diagnose, as warning signs of depression in young children arent always recognized. From extreme shyness to irritability  and anger, many parents assume they facing a behavioral issue rather than depression. If you believe your child may have depression, talk to your pediatrician. They can help you learn more about using medications to treat depression in children, and how the process may be different than the approach used in adults. Ultimately, the most comprehensive treatment for childhood depression will involve more than finding the right drug or supplement. Building a network of support is an important step for the well being of your entire family. Your childs doctor can refer you to others, such as mental health specialists and social workers, who you can work with to create a plan for your child at home and school, as well as provide support for your family. What Parents Should Know About Childhood Depression

Eladio’s replies denying any involvement with such acts. Sheriff Wade hastily checks the truck quickly and comes up empty handed. The Sheriff is insistent on harassing Eladio and asks Eladio if he is carrying a firearm. Here is an instance where honesty is not the best policy where Eladio goes to his truck to show Wade his shotgun and when as he reaches in the truck, Wade shots him in the back of t he head. The Bourgeois Social Class in Chaucers Canterbury Tales...

It is clear that Geoffrey Chaucer was acutely aware of the strict classist system in which he lived; indeed the very subject matter of his Canterbury Tales (CT) is a commentary on this system: its shortcomings and its benefits regarding English society. In fact, Chaucer is particularly adept at portraying each of his pilgrims as an example of various strata within 14th century English society. And upon first reading the CT, one might mistake Chaucers acute social awareness and insightful characterizations as accurate portrayals of British society in the late 1300s and early 1400s. Further, one might mistake his analysis, criticism, and his sardonic condemnation of many elements of British culture for genuine attempts to alter the†¦show more content†¦We cannot read the CT as an honest criticism of 14th century English society without examining the entire picture - and this picture includes Chaucers ideological contradiction. To better understand Chaucers real message - c riticizing the Three Estates system in order to encourage acceptance of his own Estate, the merchant or middle class - I will briefly discuss the Three Estates system and Chaucers role in the systems shift to include a Fourth Estate (and how this shift influenced the CT). Then I will examine four stories from the CT (The Wife of Baths Prologue, The Friars Tale, The Summoners Tale, and The Pardoners Tale) in which Chaucer seems to denounce elements of the social paradigm. I will then examine four stories from the CT (The Knights Tale, The Man of Laws Tale, The Second Nuns Tale, and The Parsons Tale) in which Chaucer contradicts his criticism of his society. Finally, I will discuss how the dominant social paradigm influenced Chaucers view of the lower classes, and how the classist structure led to ideological contradictions within the CT. Before we discuss Chaucers ideological contradictions, however, we must first examine the system he was attempting to change, the Three Estate s ystem. Although Chaucers society was in the midst of dramatic transformation regarding traditional medieval hierarchy, the social paradigm in the late 1300sShow MoreRelated Compare and contrast how the three male characters are presented to us913 Words   |  4 Pageshow the three male characters are presented to us in The Millers Tale and consider their roles in the Fabliau. Eddard Pain is a gift from the gods, Lord Eddard,† Grand Maester Pycelle told him. â€Å"It means the bone is knitting, the flesh healing itself. Be thankful. I thought you had best know.† â€Å"Dark wings, dark words,† Ned said grimly. â€Å"What of it?† â€Å"Lord Tywin is greatly wroth about the men you sent after Ser Gregor Clegane,† the maester confided. â€Å"I feared he would be. You will recall, I said as much in council.† â€Å"Let him be wroth,† Ned said. Every time his leg throbbed, he remembered Jaime Lannister’s smile, and Jory dead in his arms. â€Å"Let him write all the letters to the queen he likes. Lord Beric rides beneath the king’s own banner. If Lord Tywin attempts to interfere with the king’s justice, he will have Robert to answer to. The only thing His Grace enjoys more than hunting is making war on lords who defy him.† Pycelle pulled back, his maester’s chain jangling. â€Å"As you say. I shall visit again on the morrow.† The old man hurriedly gathered up his things and took his leave. Ned had little doubt that he was bound straight for the royal apartments, to whisper at the queen. I thought you had best know, indeed . . . as if Cersei had not instructed him to pass along her father’s threats. He hoped his response rattled those perfect teeth of hers. Ned was not near as confident of Robert as he pretended, but there was no reason Cersei need know that. When Pycelle was gone, Ned called for a cup of honeyed wine. That clouded the mind as well, yet not as badly. He needed to be able to think. A thousand times, he asked himself what Jon Arryn might have done, had he lived long enough to act on what he’d learned. Or perhaps he had acted, and died for it. It was queer how sometimes a child’s innocent eyes can see things that grown men are blind to. Someday, when Sansa was grown, he would have to tell her how she had made it all come clear for him. He’s not the least bit like that old drunken king, she had declared, angry and unknowing, and the simple truth of it had twisted inside him, cold as death. This was the sword that killed Jon Arryn, Ned thought then, and it will kill Robert as well, a slower death but full as certain. Shattered legs may heal in time, but some betrayals fester and poison the soul. Littlefinger came calling an hour after the Grand Maester had left, clad in a plum-colored doublet with a mockingbird embroidered on the breast in black thread, and a striped cloak of black and white. â€Å"I cannot visit long, my lord,† he announced. â€Å"Lady Tanda expects me to lunch with her. No doubt she will roast me a fatted calf. If it’s near as fatted as her daughter, I’m like to rupture and die. And how is your leg?† â€Å"Inflamed and painful, with an itch that is driving me mad.† Littlefinger lifted an eyebrow. â€Å"In future, try not to let any horses fall on it. I would urge you to heal quickly. The realm grows restive. Varys has heard ominous whispers from the west. Freeriders and sellswords have been flocking to Casterly Rock, and not for the thin pleasure of Lord Tywin’s conversation.† â€Å"Is there word of the king?† Ned demanded. â€Å"Just how long does Robert intend to hunt?† â€Å"Given his preferences, I believe he’d stay in the forest until you and the queen both die of old age,† Lord Petyr replied with a faint smile. â€Å"Lacking that, I imagine he’ll return as soon as he’s killed something. They found the white hart, it seems . . . or rather, what remained of it. Some wolves found it first, and left His Grace scarcely more than a hoof and a horn. Robert was in a fury, until he heard talk of some monstrous boar deeper in the forest. Then nothing would do but he must have it. Prince Joffrey returned this morning, with the Royces, Ser Balon Swann, and some twenty others of the party. The rest are still with the king.† â€Å"The Hound?† Ned asked, frowning. Of all the Lannister party, Sandor Clegane was the one who concerned him the most, now that Ser Jaime had fled the city to join his father. â€Å"Oh, returned with Joffrey, and went straight to the queen.† Littlefinger smiled. â€Å"I would have given a hundred silver stags to have been a roach in the rushes when he learned that Lord Beric was off to behead his brother.† â€Å"Even a blind man could see the Hound loathed his brother.† â€Å"Ah, but Gregor was his to loathe, not yours to kill. Once Dondarrion lops the summit off our Mountain, the Clegane lands and incomes will pass to Sandor, but I wouldn’t hold my water waiting for his thanks, not that one. And now you must forgive me. Lady Tanda awaits with her fatted calves.† On the way to the door, Lord Petyr spied Grand Maester Malleon’s massive tome on the table and paused to idly flip open the cover. â€Å"The Lineages and Histories of the Great Houses of the Seven Kingdoms, With Descriptions of Many High Lords and Noble Ladies and Their Children,† he read. â€Å"Now there is tedious reading if ever I saw it. A sleeping potion, my lord?† For a brief moment Ned considered telling him all of it, but there was something in Littlefinger’s japes that irked him. The man was too clever by half, a mocking smile never far from his lips. â€Å"Jon Arryn was studying this volume when he was taken sick,† Ned said in a careful tone, to see how he might respond. And he responded as he always did: with a quip. â€Å"In that case,† he said, â€Å"death must have come as a blessed relief.† Lord Petyr Baelish bowed and took his leave. Eddard Stark allowed himself a curse. Aside from his own retainers, there was scarcely a man in this city he trusted. Littlefinger had concealed Catelyn and helped Ned in his inquiries, yet his haste to save his own skin when Jaime and his swords had come out of the rain still rankled. Varys was worse. For all his protestations of loyalty, the eunuch knew too much and did too little. Grand Maester Pycelle seemed more Cersei’s creature with every passing day, and Ser Barristan was an old man, and rigid. He would tell Ned to do his duty. Time was perilously short. The king would return from his hunt soon, and honor would require Ned to go to him with all he had learned. Vayon Poole had arranged for Sansa and Arya to sail on the Wind Witch out of Braavos, three days hence. They would be back at Winterfell before the harvest. Ned could no longer use his concern for their safety to excuse his delay. Yet last night he had dreamt of Rhaegar’s children. Lord Tywin had laid the bodies beneath the Iron Throne, wrapped in the crimson cloaks of his house guard. That was clever of him; the blood did not show so badly against the red cloth. The little princess had been barefoot, still dressed in her bed gown, and the boy . . . the boy . . . Ned could not let that happen again. The realm could not withstand a second mad king, another dance of blood and vengeance. He must find some way to save the children. Robert could be merciful. Ser Barristan was scarcely the only man he had pardoned. Grand Maester Pycelle, Varys the Spider, Lord Balon Greyjoy; each had been counted an enemy to Robert once, and each had been welcomed into friendship and allowed to retain honors and office for a pledge of fealty. So long as a man was brave and honest, Robert would treat him with all the honor and respect due a valiant enemy. This was something else: poison in the dark, a knife thrust to the soul. This he could never forgive, no more than he had forgiven Rhaegar. He will kill them all, Ned realized. And yet, he knew he could not keep silent. He had a duty to Robert, to the realm, to the shade of Jon Arryn . . . and to Bran, who surely must have stumbled on some part of the truth. Why else would they have tried to slay him? Late that afternoon he summoned Tomard, the portly guardsman with the ginger-colored whiskers his children called Fat Tom. With Jory dead and Alyn gone, Fat Tom had command of his household guard. The thought filled Ned with vague disquiet. Tomard was a solid man; affable, loyal, tireless, capable in a limited way, but he was near fifty, and even in his youth he had never been energetic. Perhaps Ned should not have been so quick to send off half his guard, and all his best swords among them. â€Å"I shall require your help,† Ned said when Tomard appeared, looking faintly apprehensive, as he always did when called before his lord. â€Å"Take me to the godswood.† â€Å"Is that wise, Lord Eddard? With your leg and all?† â€Å"Perhaps not. But necessary.† Tomard summoned Varly. With one arm around each man’s shoulders, Ned managed to descend the steep tower steps and hobble across the bailey. â€Å"I want the guard doubled,† he told Fat Tom. â€Å"No one enters or leaves the Tower of the Hand without my leave.† Tom blinked. â€Å"M’lord, with Alyn and the others away, we are hard-pressed already—† â€Å"It will only be a short while. Lengthen the watches.† â€Å"As you say, m’lord,† Tom answered. â€Å"Might I ask why—† â€Å"Best not,† Ned answered crisply. The godswood was empty, as it always was here in this citadel of the southron gods. Ned’s leg was screaming as they lowered him to the grass beside the heart tree. â€Å"Thank you.† He drew a paper from his sleeve, sealed with the sigil of his House. â€Å"Kindly deliver this at once.† Tomard looked at the name Ned had written on the paper and licked his lips anxiously. â€Å"My lord . . . â€Å" â€Å"Do as I bid you, Tom,† Ned said. How long he waited in the quiet of the godswood, he could not say. It was peaceful here. The thick walls shut out the clamor of the castle, and he could hear birds singing, the murmur of crickets, leaves rustling in a gentle wind. The heart tree was an oak, brown and faceless, yet Ned Stark still felt the presence of his gods. His leg did not seem to hurt so much. She came to him at sunset, as the clouds reddened above the walls and towers. She came alone, as he had bid her. For once she was dressed simply, in leather boots and hunting greens. When she drew back the hood of her brown cloak, he saw the bruise where the king had struck her. The angry plum color had faded to yellow, and the swelling was down, but there was no mistaking it for anything but what it was. â€Å"Why here?† Cersei Lannister asked as she stood over him. â€Å"So the gods can see.† She sat beside him on the grass. Her every move was graceful. Her curling blond hair moved in the wind, and her eyes were green as the leaves of summer. It had been a long time since Ned Stark had seen her beauty, but he saw it now. â€Å"I know the truth Jon Arryn died for,† he told her. â€Å"Do you?† The queen watched his face, wary as a cat. â€Å"Is that why you called me here, Lord Stark? To pose me riddles? Or is it your intent to seize me, as your wife seized my brother?† â€Å"If you truly believed that, you would never have come.† Ned touched her cheek gently. â€Å"Has he done this before?† â€Å"Once or twice.† She shied away from his hand. â€Å"Never on the face before. Jaime would have killed him, even if it meant his own life.† Cersei looked at him defiantly. â€Å"My brother is worth a hundred of your friend.† â€Å"Your brother?† Ned said. â€Å"Or your lover?† â€Å"Both.† She did not flinch from the truth. â€Å"Since we were children together. And why not? The Targaryens wed brother to sister for three hundred years, to keep the bloodlines pure. And Jaime and I are more than brother and sister. We are one person in two bodies. We shared a womb together. He came into this world holding my foot, our old maester said. When he is in me, I feel . . . whole.† The ghost of a smile flitted over her lips. â€Å"My son Bran . . . â€Å" To her credit, Cersei did not look away. â€Å"He saw us. You love your children, do you not?† Robert had asked him the very same question, the morning of the melee. He gave her the same answer. â€Å"With all my heart.† â€Å"No less do I love mine.† Ned thought, If it came to that, the life of some child I did not know, against Robb and Sansa and Arya and Bran and Rickon, what would I do? Even more so, what would Catelyn do, if it were Jon’s life, against the children of her body? He did not know. He prayed he never would. â€Å"All three are Jaime’s,† he said. It was not a question. â€Å"Thank the gods.† The seed is strong, Jon Arryn had cried on his deathbed, and so it was. All those bastards, all with hair as black as night. Grand Maester Malleon recorded the last mating between stag and lion, some ninety years ago, when Tya Lannister wed Gowen Baratheon, third son of the reigning lord. Their only issue, an unnamed boy described in Malleon’s tome as a large and lusty lad born with a full head of black hair, died in infancy. Thirty years before that a male Lannister had taken a Baratheon maid to wife. She had given him three daughters and a son, each black-haired. No matter how far back Ned searched in the brittle yellowed pages, always he found the gold yielding before the coal. â€Å"A dozen years,† Ned said. â€Å"How is it that you have had no children by the king?† She lifted her head, defiant. â€Å"Your Robert got me with child once,† she said, her voice thick with contempt. â€Å"My brother found a woman to cleanse me. He never knew. If truth be told, I can scarcely bear for him to touch me, and I have not let him inside me for years. I know other ways to pleasure him, when he leaves his whores long enough to stagger up to my bedchamber. Whatever we do, the king is usually so drunk that he’s forgotten it all by the next morning.† How could they have all been so blind? The truth was there in front of them all the time, written on the children’s faces. Ned felt sick. â€Å"I remember Robert as he was the day he took the throne, every inch a king,† he said quietly. â€Å"A thousand other women might have loved him with all their hearts. What did he do to make you hate him so?† Her eyes burned, green fire in the dusk, like the lioness that was her sigil. â€Å"The night of our wedding feast, the first time we shared a bed, he called me by your sister’s name. He was on top of me, in me, stinking of wine, and he whispered Lyanna.† Ned Stark thought of pale blue roses, and for a moment he wanted to weep. â€Å"I do not know which of you I pity most.† The queen seemed amused by that. â€Å"Save your pity for yourself, Lord Stark. I want none of it.† â€Å"You know what I must do.† â€Å"Must?† She put her hand on his good leg, just above the knee. â€Å"A true man does what he will, not what he must.† Her fingers brushed lightly against his thigh, the gentlest of promises. â€Å"The realm needs a strong Hand. Joff will not come of age for years. No one wants war again, least of all me.† Her hand touched his face, his hair. â€Å"If friends can turn to enemies, enemies can become friends. Your wife is a thousand leagues away, and my brother has fled. Be kind to me, Ned. I swear to you, you shall never regret it.† â€Å"Did you make the same offer to Jon Arryn?† She slapped him. â€Å"I shall wear that as a badge of honor,† Ned said dryly. â€Å"Honor,† she spat. â€Å"How dare you play the noble lord with me! What do you take me for? You’ve a bastard of your own, I’ve seen him. Who was the mother, I wonder? Some Dornish peasant you raped while her holdfast burned? A whore? Or was it the grieving sister, the Lady Ashara? She threw herself into the sea, I’m told. Why was that? For the brother you slew, or the child you stole? Tell me, my honorable Lord Eddard, how are you any different from Robert, or me, or Jaime?† â€Å"For a start,† said Ned, â€Å"I do not kill children. You would do well to listen, my lady. I shall say this only once. When the king returns from his hunt, I intend to lay the truth before him. You must be gone by then. You and your children, all three, and not to Casterly Rock. If I were you, I should take ship for the Free Cities, or even farther, to the Summer Isles or the Port of Ibben. As far as the winds blow.† â€Å"Exile,† she said. â€Å"A bitter cup to drink from.† â€Å"A sweeter cup than your father served Rhaegar’s children,† Ned said, â€Å"and kinder than you deserve. Your father and your brothers would do well to go with you. Lord Tywin’s gold will buy you comfort and hire swords to keep you safe. You shall need them. I promise you, no matter where you flee, Robert’s wrath will follow you, to the back of beyond if need be.† The queen stood. â€Å"And what of my wrath, Lord Stark?† she asked softly. Her eyes searched his face. â€Å"You should have taken the realm for yourself. It was there for the taking. Jaime told me how you found him on the Iron Throne the day King’s Landing fell, and made him yield it up. That was your moment. All you needed to do was climb those steps, and sit. Such a sad mistake.† â€Å"I have made more mistakes than you can possibly imagine,† Ned said, â€Å"but that was not one of them.† â€Å"Oh, but it was, my lord,† Cersei insisted. â€Å"When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground.† She turned up her hood to hide her swollen face and left him there in the dark beneath the oak, amidst the quiet of the godswood, under a blue-black sky. Whereas On The 22nd Day Of September, A.D. 1862, A Proclamation Was Is

Whereas on the 22nd day of September, A.D. 1862, a proclamation was issued by the President of the United States, containing, among other things, the following, to wit: "That on the 1st day of January, A.D. 1863, all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free; and the executive government of the United States, including the military and naval authority thereof, will recognize and maintain the freedom of such persons and will do no act or acts to repress such persons, or any of them, in any efforts they may make for their actual freedom. "That the executive will on the 1st day of January aforesaid, by proclamation, designate the States and parts of States, if any, in which the people thereof, respectively, shall then be in rebellion against the United States; and the fact that any State or the people thereof shall on that day be in good faith represented in the Congress of the United States by members chosen thereto at elections wherein a majority of the qualified voters of such States shall have participated shall, in the absence of strong countervailing testimony, be deemed conclusive evidence that such State and the people thereof are not then in rebellion against the United States." Now, therefore, I, Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States, by virtue of the power in me vested as Commander-In-Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States in time of actual armed rebellion against the authority and government of the United States, and as a fit and necessary war measure for supressing said rebellion, do, on this 1st day of January, A.D. 1863, and in accordance with my purpose so to do, publicly proclaimed for the full period of one hundred days from the first day above mentioned, order and designate as the States and parts of States wherein the people thereof, respectively, are this day in rebellion against the United States the following, to wit: Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana (except the parishes of St. Bernard, Palquemines, Jefferson, St. John, St. Charles, St. James, Ascension, Assumption, Terrebone, Lafourche, St. Mary, St. Martin, and Orleans, including the city of New Orleans), Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia (except the forty-eight counties designated as West Virginia, and also the counties of Berkeley, Accomac, Morthhampton, Elizabeth City, York, Princess Anne, and Norfolk, including the cities of Norfolk and Portsmouth), and which excepted parts are for the present left precisely as if this proclamation were not issued. And by virtue of the power and for the purpose aforesaid, I do order and declare that all persons held as slaves within said designated States and parts of States are, and henceforward shall be, free; and that the Executive Government of the United States, including the military and naval authorities thereof, will recognize and maintain the freedom of said persons. And I hereby enjoin upon the people so declared to be free to abstain from all violence, unless in necessary self-defense; and I recommend to them that, in all case when allowed, they labor faithfully for reasonable wages. And I further declare and make known that such persons of suitable condition will be received into the armed service of the United States to garrison forts, positions, stations, and other places, and to man vessels of all sorts in said service. And upon this act, sincerely believed to be an act of justice, warranted by the Constitution upon military necessity, I invoke the considerate judgment of mankind and the gracious favor of Almighty God. On Jan. 1, 1863, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln declared free all slaves residing in territory in rebellion against the federal government. This Emancipation Proclamation actually freed few people. It did not apply to slaves in border states fighting on the Union side; nor did it affect slaves in southern areas already under Union control. Naturally, the states in rebellion did not act on Lincoln's order. But the proclamation did show Americans-- and the world--that the civil war was now being fought to end slavery. Lincoln had been reluctant to come

Our Justice System essays

Our Justice System essays I believe that our justice system is all messed up. Mite is right. Thats how I think our justice system works. Lets take Michael Jackson for example. Now who is going to convict the King of Pop of everything that he was charged with? Not many people chosen as jurors obviously. All the evidence showed that he did some pretty messed up stuff. Another example of this flaw in our justice system is the case of O. J Simpson. For those that dont know, Simpson was at one point in time a professional football player and was convicted of killing a white women. Was he convicted of murder? No. why? Well, lets think about this for a moment. Hes rich, famous, and part of a Chicago foot ball team and being tried in Chicago. Now if you take a middle or low class unknown person and charge them with murder, you know theyre going to prison. Of course there are some cases to argue with the point that I am trying to make, but lets look at those for a quick second. Martha Stewart, I think, is a pretty god example. Shes rich and famous and went to jail for a couple months. Although, when you think about it and look at the facts, she should have gone to jail for much longer then she did. In the end, what I am trying to say is that when it comes to justice, might is right is not acceptable. As the Old Testament states, eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth. No matter who you are, with the crime committed, comes an equal punishment. ...

Bundling Campaign Contributions - How It Works

Bundling Campaign Contributions - How It Works Bundling campaign  contributions is a common practice in American congressional and presidential elections. The term bundling refers to a form of fundraising in which one person or small groups of people - they might be lobbyists, business owners, special interest groups or activists seeking legislative action  - convince  their wealthy friends, coworkers and other like-minded donors to simultaneously write checks to their preferred candidate for public office. It is not uncommon for bundlers to raise hundreds of millions of dollars in a presidential-election year and receive special treatment in return for their work. A bundler is the person or small group of people  who pool or aggregates these contributions and then delivers them in one lump sum to a political campaign. In the 2000 presidential campaign, Republican nominee  George W. Bush used the term pioneers to describe bundlers who raised at least $100,000 for his White House bid. Bundlers are often rewarded by successful candidates with plum positions in an administration or other political favors.  Four out of five of Democratic presidential nominee  Barack Obamas largest fundraisers in the 2008 presidential campaign received  key posts in his administration, according to the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Responsive Politics. Bundling is a legal way for campaign supporters to circumvent  individual contribution limits set forth in federal campaign finance laws.  An individual can contribute up to $2,700 to a candidate for federal office in a single election cycle, or up to $5,400 a year. But bundlers can persuade like-minded donors to give at once, typically by inviting them to a fundraiser or special event and in turn rolling up those contributions into massive sums of money to federal candidates. Bundling Is Not Heavily Regulated The Federal Election Commission, the entity that regulates campaign-finance laws in the U.S.,  requires candidates for federal office  disclose the funds bundled by registered lobbyists. For everyone whos not a lobbyists? Disclosure is voluntary and sporadic. In the 2008 presidential election, for example, Obama and Republican nominee John McCain both agreed to make public the names of bundlers who raised more than $50,000. The FEC rules, however, are considered loose by government watchdogs and  easily circumvented by crafty bundlers and lobbyists wishing to remain out of the public eye. In some cases, bundlers are able to avoid disclosing their role in raising large sums of money for a campaign by never physically pooling and delivering the checks, just organizing the fundraising.   How Much Money Do Bundlers Raise? Bundlers are responsible for generating tens of millions of dollars to their preferred candidates. In the 2012 presidential race, for example, bundlers delivered about $200 million to Obamas campaign, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Bundlers, who are often corporate CEOs, lobbyists, hedge fund managers or independently wealthy people, are able to funnel far more money to campaigns than they could personally give under campaign finance laws, states the good-government group Public Citizen.   Why Bundlers Bundle Bundlers who deliver large amounts of campaign cash to candidates have been rewarded with access to prominent White House advisers and strategists, official titles and privileged treatment in campaigns, and ambassadorships and other plum political appointments. The Center for Public Integrity reported that Obama rewarded about 200 bundlers with jobs and appointments. Bundlers play an enormous role in determining the success of political campaigns and are apt to receive preferential treatment if their candidate wins, Public Citizen wrote. Bundlers who direct money to presidential candidates tend to be first in line for plum ambassador positions and other political appointments. Industry titans and lobbyists are more likely to receive preferential treatment from elected officials if they raised large amounts of money for them. When Is Bundling Illegal? Bundlers seeking political favors often promise big money to candidates. And sometimes they fail to deliver. So in some cases, bundlers have been known to give large sums of money to employees, family members and friends with the implicit goal of having those employees, family members and friends turn around and contribute to a candidate for Congress or the presidency. Thats illegal.

Fundamentals of Mass Communication Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Fundamentals of Mass Communication - Essay Example The films Terminator and Robocop mirrored the â€Å"dehumanizing potential of technology† that was an issue in America during the reign of President Reagan (16) with the concept of male heroes and female damsel in distress to make the story alive and exciting. However, some films were created simply to be entertaining without much connection to a particular social and political state of affairs. I chose to deconstruct The Matrix film episode due to the meanings attached to its symbols and due to its popularity. The symbolism and gender stereotyping in film can be an effective tool in conveying messages to mankind’s socio-political issues. The film The Matrix was first shown in public in 1999 but due to its huge success it became a trilogy with The Matrix Reloaded episode in May 2003, and The Matrix Revolutions shown in November of the same year. The film appeals to both male and female audiences from teenagers to late twenties basically because it is the age group who are interested in virtual games and martial arts stunts. The film is heavily loaded with gravity defying martial arts stunts and its story is based on computer generated technology which is of interest to the aforementioned audiences. The romance between the lead characters of Neo and Trinity as well as Trinity’s own persona in the film makes it generally appealing to female audiences. Major Characters and its Symbols. In the hit science fiction film The Matrix, the major characters Neo, Trinity, Morpheus, the Oracle, and Agent Smith embodies the archetypes described by Carl Jung. These archetypes along with the other symbols were used to support the entirety of the film and the message it wanted to convey to its audiences. It is worth noting though that the film is heavily loaded with male characters playing both the protagonists and antagonists roles. In the trilogy, there are four women who played important roles:

The Correlation between Psycho-Reactive Drugs and Music Culture in the Research Paper

The Correlation between Psycho-Reactive Drugs and Music Culture in the 1960s - Research Paper Example These musical styles and cultural trance dances comprise the far eastern religious groups’ mantra chanting, those of the spinning dervishes of Turkey, as well as Morocco’s joujouka players (Landry & Landry 92). This paper delves into the correlation between psycho-reactive drugs and music culture in the 1960s. Introduction Psychoactive drugs refer to substances that have an impact on somebody’s mood, thinking, perception as well as feeling. These drugs activate the brain’s pleasure centers thus increasing the potential of engaging in drug abuse continually. People have always ingested psychoactive drug (Goode 1). The 1960s are however notorious for the celebration of abuse of these drugs, especially among the young people. Moreover, the growth of the music scene of this period was interconnected to the augmented use of hallucinogens as well as marijuana by the culture of the youths. A study conducted on the same revealed that in the year 1962, only twenty- five thousand Americans had even tried using LSD. However, after a period of only four years (towards the end of the year 1965), this number had increased to approximately four million users. Three quarters of the users were college or high school age students (Shapiro 139). In 1960s, there was the emergence of a spirited subculture of drugs, with some social groups viewing the use of drugs positively, assessing persons on the basis of whether they made use of illegal drugs, and believing that ‘turning on’ an individual who was not a drug abuser was a virtue. This subculture became a strong force in engaging young people into the habit of abusing illegal psychoactive substances. Drug abuse had never before gotten to such a great number of youths. (Lyman & Potter 51). As a way of rebellion and a means asserting insubordination of community norms, young people in America used drugs. In the year 1964, those who opposed mainstream ideals and American culture made San Franci sco’s Haight-Ashbury district their meeting place, rock music being the basis for this counter-cultural stance. Following his encounter of a world of love and peace during a psilocybin mushroom trip, Allen Ginsberg, a beatnik poet, made up the term ‘flower power’ to cover this thought. Soon, the term came to be a symbol of 1960s counter-culture all together (Brewer 25). LSD became increasingly readily available as years went on. In the mid 1960s, Owsley Stanley (commonly known as the ‘king of acid’) became top-grade acid’s key vendor, and built very close bonds with the world of music (Shapiro 134-137 & Wong 3). The greatest number of the musicians heavily used heroin, and some were even dealers of this drug. Moreover, marijuana played a great role in their music as well as in their daily lives. The 1960s also saw a shift in drugs of choice in the drug scene of the Unites States of America. The use of such psychedelic substances as marijuana, heroin, methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA), Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), and N-diethyltryptamine (DMT) became more popular in the 1960s and their popularity increased through the beginning of 1970s (Lyman & Potter 51). LSD users often acclaim the drug arguing that it helps them attain a heightened sensation of understanding of the world. They also believe that the drug is a stimulator of creativity. In users, many of the drug’s effects are evident through the kind music that they produce when they are high on the drug (Shapiro 137). Continuous chanting or drumbeats accompanies cultural

In the past, people have always tried their own ways of using daily measurements. It was needed and used for daily trade as well as further businesses. These things could only have been made if the people knew they were being fair and honest; hence, the reason that different measurements needed to exist. Many short distance measurements were based on the lengths of the human body. The width of a thumb was used to resemble the inch, which we used today in the English System of Measurements. The foot, which is twelve inches, was compared to the length of the human foot; however, today it is derived to be longer than most people’s feet. The yard, which is equal to three feet, was inferred to be the length from the tip of the nose, to the end of the middle finger when the arm and hand are extended. The Anglo Saxons of England measured these short differences in their own ways too. The length of three barleycorns was their length of the inch (it was very close to the modern length) . Then in 1066, the Normans conquered England and brought back to England the Roman tradition of the twelve inch foot. During the reign of Henry I the foot became official and was engraved on the base of a column of St. Peter’s church in London (Rowlett, R. (2001). A dictionary of units of measurement. English customary weights and measures). He also arranged the yard to be established in England as well. Although, inches, feet, yards etc. measured shorter distances, miles were used to measure much longer distances. This mile was a Roman unit, which was primarily the length of 1,000 paces of a Roman legion. The â€Å"pace† was meant to be two steps, about five feet, which measured the mile to be roughly about 5,000 feet. The basic unit that was used for weight ... .... Origin of the metric system). Currently, people of many countries use this SI unit for measurements. The meter is used for measuring length (it can be converted to millimeters, centimeters, decimeters, kilometers, decameters, and hectometers). The liter is used to measure volume and its conversions are similar to the meter conversions. The gram is used to measure mass and its conversions follow the meter’s conversions as well. Scientists from all over the world make sure of they use this metric system in order to communicate data and make all calculations simpler. Although a vast majority of world uses the metric system in daily activities, the United States, UK, and other countries decide to still use English units daily. And even though everyone in the world may use different measurements daily, it was all created to make our lives a little simpler each day.

Defining and Avoiding Plagiarism: The WPA Statement on Best Practices

This article discusses the issues surrounding plagiarism and providing detail into what plagiarism is and identifying how it can be regulated in an attempt to address this growing educational concern. The article describes plagiarism as an act â€Å"when a writer deliberately uses someone else’s language, ideas, or other original (not common-knowledge) material without acknowledg ¬ing its source (Defining and Avoiding Plagiarism, 2003). The most common problems with regard to plagiarism lie in distinguishing plagiarism from misuse of sources.Plagiarism, as defined previously, is the use of another’s ideas without attributing it to its source, while misuse of sources, is the failure to properly attribute the ideas to its source (Defining and Avoiding Plagiarism, 2003). The difference is that in plagiarism, a person attempts to take credit for another’s idea while in misuse of sources, a person attempts to give credit to the source but fails to do this in the pr oper manner or format. The reasons that students usually commit one error or another can be attributed to students difficulties with the integration of the information into their work, student’s failure to properly document research material, or simply be ignorant of the mistakes because of various learning backgrounds (Defining and Avoiding Plagiarism, 2003).Whatever the causes for these mistakes, the difficult part for the educators is in discerning the intent of the writer in using the sources in order to determine whether or not there was merely a simple misuse of sources or a blatant attempt at plagiarism. Students may simply not be aware that what has been done is already plagiarism or has attempted to plagiarize but cleverly disguises it as a simple misuse of sources. The key therefore to addressing this educational problem lies in making sure students understand the relevance of proper citation in their work.
